Court Protocol

The court is a formal and serious place. People are expected to behave in way that shows respect for the Court and justice system.

The Magistrate

Whenever the Magistrate enters or leaves the courtroom, you should stand and bow your head. Whenever you enter or leave the courtroom, you should bow to the Coat of Arms of Queensland. You should address the Magistrate as “Your Honour” and stand whenever the Magistrate addresses you.

Courtroom Etiquette

It is expected that those who are in the courtroom will be quiet and respectful. You should not speak unless you are called on by the Magistrate. You should not eat, smoke, or chew gum.

When you are in the courtroom, make sure your phone is turned off or switched to silent. You must not take pictures or record the proceedings.
